An Introduction to Sugarcane Bagasse
Approximately 1.9 billion tons of sugarcane is produced annually, with Brazil and India leading production. The fibrous residue remaining after juice extraction is called sugarcane bagasse. Rather than being discarded, this material serves as an excellent raw material for sustainable, eco-friendly tableware production.
Bagasse ranges in color from lemon yellow to yellowish-gray and comprises cellulose and lignin fibers. The chemical composition breaks down as: 50% cellulose, 25% hemicellulose, and 25% lignin.
Applications of Sugarcane Bagasse
Sugarcane bagasse pulp has a smooth, slurry-like texture with strong absorption capacity. When bleached, its long fibers work well for manufacturing:
- Writing and printing paper
- Paperboard
- Kraft paper
- Tissue paper
- Coated paper
- Sustainable paper tableware
Advantages of Sugarcane Bagasse Pulp
- Easy sourcing due to large-scale sugar industry
- Cellulose content (50-55%) equivalent to wood fibers
- Lignin content (20%) facilitates cooking
- Excellent absorption capability creates rigid, strong pulp
Advantages of Bagasse Tableware
Products manufactured from sugarcane bagasse are entirely biodegradable and compostable, offering significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to plastic or Styrofoam alternatives.
Machines Used to Manufacture Bagasse Tableware
Automatic Tableware Forming Machine
Parason's automatic forming machine employs hybrid technology, molding bagasse pulp into tableware structures and drying products within a single unit.
Tableware Edge Trimming Machine
This machine removes excess material and sizes products to defined dimensions.
Production Molds
Custom-designed molds shape pulp into specific plate designs, ensuring precise dimensions and uniformity.
Manufacturing Process
Pulping
Bagasse fiber sheets mix with water and chemicals, breaking down into pulp slurry.
Forming (Pulp Molding)
Bagasse pulp stock is molded into tableware shapes using specialized equipment.
Drying
Formed products pass through heated sections to remove moisture and achieve sturdy structure.
Trimming and Finishing
Dried tableware undergoes trimming for smooth edges and consistent sizing before quality inspection.
