Introduction
A trommel screen, also referred to as a rotary or drum screen, functions as mechanical screening equipment that separates materials based on particle size, shape, and density. This equipment serves various industries, particularly the pulp and paper sector, where it removes contaminants and separates unwanted elements by size and shape.
Working Principle
A trommel screen comprises a cylindrical drum featuring surface perforations or mesh screens. Typically inclined and frame-mounted, material enters at the higher end. As the drum rotates, the contents tumble and slide internally, enabling smaller particles to pass through perforations while larger particles and contaminants remain and discharge at the lower end.
Function and Advantages
The equipment offers several benefits:
- Efficiency - The rotating drum agitates and separates particles, ensuring thorough screening and separation
- Versatility - Applicable to various materials and applications
- Customization - Perforation size, mesh dimensions, drum size, and inclination angle can be adjusted per specific requirements
- Low Maintenance - Simple design with minimal moving parts simplifies operation and upkeep
- Scalping and Cleaning - Effectively removes contaminants and performs simultaneous scalping and material cleaning
Industrial Application
In pulp and paper operations, trommel screens separate fibers, eliminate contaminants including plastic and metal debris, and maintain consistent fiber size and quality for subsequent processing and paper manufacturing.
