The Beginning of Printing and Writing Paper
Though paper was invented as a communication medium, it has become useful across countless fields including education, healthcare, construction, and automotive industries. Paper manufacturing mills began operations around 1690.
Types of Printing and Writing Paper
Various printing and writing papers serve different purposes, including newspapers, cards, books, packaging materials, printer papers, art papers, and craft papers. Each type involves distinct manufacturing processes.
Manufacturing of Writing and Printing Papers
The production process begins with pulp creation from recycled paper products using pulping machines. Pulp can be produced through two methods:
- Mechanical pulp: Created using grinders and choppers; less costly but lower strength
- Chemical pulp: Produced using sulfite or sulfate chemicals; offers higher strength for quality paper products
For writing and printing papers, chemical pulp is preferred due to superior strength properties.
Processing Steps
After chemical operations, the material undergoes:
- Washing and screening to remove impurities
- Cleaning processes to eliminate dirt, shives, and specs
- Roller processing to remove water content
- Bleaching/deinking to remove stains and achieve pure white pulp
The Writing Printing Paper Mill Process
The processed pulp is formed into sheets in the paper machine. The process includes:
- Removing excess water through rolling
- Pressing sections for complete drying
- Adding coatings for smooth, shiny surfaces
- Converting into rolls and cutting into smaller sizes for transport
